Perth business travel guide

To know what a city has to offer, local insider knowledge is key. From the best area to stay, to the perfect spot for a business lunch to Perth’s hidden gems, Corporate Travel Management’s (CTM’s) General Manager for Western Australia and Northern Territory, Jonathan Nelson has all the tips and tricks in this Perth business travel guide.

What makes Perth a great place to conduct business?

Where do I start; many things make Perth a destination of choice for business, but these would be my top 5.

  1. Location, location, location. Perth is located on the west coast of Australia and is the closest major city to Asia, making it an ideal gateway for businesses looking to tap into the region’s growing markets.
  2. Western Australia’s economy has been growing consistently over the years, with a focus on industries such as mining, tourism, and technology. This provides numerous business opportunities for both local and international companies.
  3. Perth has a highly skilled and diverse workforce, with a strong emphasis on education and training. This makes it easier for businesses to find the talent they need to succeed.
  4. Perth is well-equipped with modern infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art transportation system, a growing number of high-speed internet options, and world-class business venues.
  5. In addition to its many business opportunities, Perth is also known for its high quality of life. With its beautiful beaches, vibrant cultural scene, and diverse range of outdoor activities, it’s a great place to live and work.

Overall, Perth’s combination of location, growing economy, skilled workforce, modern infrastructure, and high quality of life make it a top destination for businesses looking to expand and succeed.

Which is the best area in Perth to stay in when travelling for business, and why?

The CBD is the heart of the city’s commercial and financial sector, and it offers a convenient and accessible location for business travellers.

Some reasons why the CBD is the best area to stay in for business travel include:

  • It is home to many business venues, including convention centres, hotels, and co-working spaces. This makes it easy to get to your meetings and events without wasting time on transportation
  • It’s well-connected by public transportation, with train, bus, and ferry services all readily available. This makes it easy to get to other parts of the city if needed.
  • The CBD offers a wide range of dining and entertainment options, from high-end restaurants to casual cafes, providing plenty of opportunities to relax and unwind after a long day of meetings
  • It is a great place to shop, with several shopping centres and department stores located in the area.

What is the best way to get from the airport to Perth?

The best option for you will depend on your budget, time constraints, and personal preferences. Here are some of the most popular options:

  1. Taxis and ride-share services such as Uber and Ola are readily available at the airport, and they offer a convenient and comfortable way to get to your destination.
  2. Several shuttle bus services offer transportation from the airport to various parts of the city, including the CBD.
  3. The airport is connected to the city by public transportation, including trains and buses. This is an affordable option, but it may take longer and involve multiple transfers to reach your destination.
  4. Renting a car is a convenient option if you have a valid driver’s license and would like the flexibility to explore the city on your own.

Regardless of which option you choose, it’s a good idea to plan and book your transportation in advance to ensure a smooth and stress-free arrival in Perth.

Where is your most recommended place to conduct business meetings for visiting business travellers, and why?

Crown Perth. This large casino and entertainment complex located in Burswood offers a range of meeting and conference facilities, including large ballrooms, smaller meeting rooms, and outdoor spaces. It’s a great option for business travellers who need a range of amenities and services, including hotels, restaurants, and entertainment options.

What should every business traveller experience while in Perth?

I would recommend Kings Park. Located in the heart of the city, it offers stunning views as well as a range of walking trails, picnic areas, and cultural attractions, including the Western Australian Botanic Garden.

What hidden gem would you recommend?

Take a visit to Rottnest Island. If you have a free day whilst travelling to Perth on business, especially between November to May, a day trip via a 90-minute ferry ride from the CBD to this little paradise just 19km offshore is a must. Its beaches rival some of the best in the world and it’s the only place on earth you will see the adorable Quokkas! While on the island, rent a bike, snorkel the water, or take a bus tour with lunch package options.

In your experience, what is the most common mistake business travellers make when visiting Perth?

As the Perth CBD is relatively small (geographically) it’s hard to make too big a mistake, be it choosing accommodation, mode of transport or booking function space. However, when some business travellers are planning a ‘free day’ they often fail to check just how far our other attractions are away from the CBD. It is highly recommended to check the distance, for example, the dolphins at Monkey Mia is a 1800km round trip from Perth!

What is the best and worst time of year to travel to Perth, and why?

The best time to visit Perth is between November and late May, simply because the weather is generally at its best and provides a great local atmosphere with people enjoying it – it is wonderful. From June to October, it can rain a lot, so remember to pack an umbrella or prepare to get wet! Hotel demand in Perth is relatively consistent, so except for school holidays and major events, the time of year shouldn’t have too much of an impact on the price of accommodation.
